Fuel used before money is involved

Litres consumed equal distance in kilometres divided by 100, multiplied by consumption in litres per 100 km. Cost is that fuel quantity multiplied by the price per litre. The relationship assumes the consumption figure describes the driving being priced and that every litre costs the entered price.

A 500 km drive at 8 L/100 km

Five hundred kilometres is five blocks of 100 km. At 8 L/100 km the vehicle uses 40 litres; at 1.80 per litre, 40 × 1.80 gives 72.00. That is fuel spend for the distance, not the cost of owning the vehicle.

Use measured consumption when possible

A dashboard average can lag behind a new trip, while an advertised economy figure is measured under a prescribed test cycle. Fill-to-fill records over several tanks usually give a better planning input: record odometer distance, litres bought, and whether the tank was filled to the same point.

Why one route can cost more

Cold starts, traffic, wind, payload, tyre pressure, terrain, idling, and towing change litres used even when the route length does not change. A mountain return journey can have the same distance in both directions but a different rate of fuel use on each leg.

What the estimate leaves out

Tolls, parking, ferry tickets, maintenance, depreciation, and the value of a driver's time are not fuel. Add those as separate line items for a travel budget; folding them into a fuel price hides which expense actually changed.

A useful planning range

Run a second case with consumption one litre per 100 km higher or with the next likely pump price. On the default distance, an extra 1 L/100 km means five more litres, so the estimate rises by 9.00 at the stated price. That sensitivity is often more useful than a third decimal place.

Price changes can be separated

If the same route later costs 80.00, compare litres and price separately before blaming the vehicle. Forty litres at 2.00 per litre creates that result without any consumption change. Keeping those two components apart helps distinguish a driving change from a pump-price change.

Price a route in separate legs

A route with different road types need not use one average. Take 120 km of city driving at 9.4 L/100 km and 380 km of motorway driving at 6.9 L/100 km. The first leg uses 11.28 L and the second 26.22 L, for 37.50 L altogether. At 1.80 per litre that is 67.50. Calling the entire 500 km trip either city or motorway driving would make an apparently exact estimate less representative than this two-line record. Use measured rates from comparable journeys where a choice of route or departure time depends on the difference.

Separate a fuel-price change from a driving change

A receipt can rise without an economy problem. If 40 L cost 72.00 last month and 44 L cost 88.00 today, litres increased by 10 percent while price rose from 1.80 to 2.00, an 11.1 percent change. The combined cash increase is larger because both moved. Checking distance, litres, and unit price in that order prevents a pump-price increase from being misread as a vehicle fault, or a new consumption pattern from being hidden by a cheaper fill.

Use a range for an uncertain departure

A planned drive often has an unknown element such as rain, a roof box, traffic, or a trailer. For 500 km at 1.80 per litre, 7.0 L/100 km costs 63.00, 8.0 costs 72.00, and 9.0 costs 81.00. These are not three predictions; they show the money exposure to the rate assumption. Carry the high case when fuel availability or a shared budget matters. After the trip, replace the planning range with the receipt and odometer record rather than treating the original estimate as evidence.

Make a route estimate auditable

Before departure, write a low, expected, and high consumption rate beside the route distance and anticipated fuel price. After returning, record the odometer, litres purchased, and receipt price. Comparing the planned litres with the actual litres is more informative than comparing cash totals alone, because the total also moves with the pump price. If the result will support a reimbursement or shared payment, retain the route and receipt rather than a screenshot of one rounded output. This is a fuel-use estimate only: it does not price wear, parking, tolls, insurance, or a driver's time.
