Why the conversion is a reciprocal

US MPG says how far one gallon carries the vehicle; litres per 100 km says how much fuel is needed for a fixed distance. Because the directions are opposite, divide 235.214583 by US MPG rather than multiplying it. A smaller L/100 km result is better economy.

Converting the displayed value

At 30 US MPG, 235.214583 ÷ 30 equals 7.840486, shown as about 7.84 L/100 km. The constant combines the length of a mile and the volume of a US gallon; it is not a fuel-price or vehicle-specific assumption.

Read the direction before comparing cars

Dropping from 10 to 8 L/100 km saves two litres on every 100 km. The equivalent MPG improvement is not a fixed two-MPG change because each value sits in the denominator. Compare consumption values in one unit before deciding which change is larger.

US and Imperial MPG differ

The formula on this page is for US MPG. Imperial MPG uses a larger gallon and therefore needs a different constant, about 282.481. A car described as 40 MPG can mean materially different fuel use unless the country or gallon type is stated.

Worked reverse check

A reported 7.84 L/100 km corresponds to roughly 235.214583 ÷ 7.84, or 30.00 US MPG after rounding. Small differences in a reverse conversion are normal when a display rounds the first value to two decimals.

What it cannot establish

Unit conversion preserves a consumption measurement; it cannot prove that measurement was accurate. Test-cycle ratings, dashboard readings, and tank records describe different conditions. Use a route-specific consumption figure when calculating cash needed for a journey.

Avoid averaging unit labels

Do not average 30 MPG and 8 L/100 km as though both were ordinary linear scores. Convert both observations into one unit first, then average measurements that cover comparable driving. Otherwise the reciprocal relationship distorts the apparent midpoint.

A small comparison table

Twenty US MPG converts to about 11.76 L/100 km, 30 converts to 7.84, and 40 converts to 5.88. The steps get smaller as MPG rises. That pattern is the practical reminder that a fixed MPG increase does not represent a fixed fuel saving.

Why a ten-MPG improvement has no fixed fuel value

Consider two 100-mile journeys. At 20 US MPG, each needs 5 gallons; at 30 MPG, it needs 3.33 gallons, saving 1.67 gallons. Moving from 40 to 50 MPG changes the same journey from 2.50 to 2.00 gallons, a saving of 0.50 gallon. Both changes are ten MPG, yet the first removes more than three times as much fuel. That is why fleet comparisons often translate economy figures into fuel used over a fixed annual distance before assigning a money value.

Convert a trip before multiplying by price

Suppose a car is recorded at 27 US MPG and the planned distance is 620 km. The converter gives 235.214583 divided by 27, or 8.71 L/100 km. The journey therefore uses 620 divided by 100 times 8.71, about 54.0 litres. Only after that unit-consistent step should a local price per litre be applied. Mixing miles, kilometres, gallons, and a price labelled per litre in one line is a common way to obtain a tidy but meaningless total.

What a dashboard unit switch does not change

Many vehicles can display either MPG or L/100 km, but switching the display does not create a second measurement. The underlying fuel pulses, distance signal, rounding interval, and calibration remain the same. If the displayed economy changes immediately after a unit setting is altered, check the chosen gallon convention and reset period before interpreting it as a driving change. A tank receipt and odometer reading remain the independent check when a consumption figure will be used for reimbursement or a long-trip budget.

Use one convention in a comparison file

A purchase shortlist can contain manufacturer figures, road-test results, and personal tank records. Convert each US-MPG item to L/100 km before ranking it, then add the measurement condition beside the figure. A 35 MPG laboratory value and a 35 MPG winter commute may share a unit but not a purpose. Conversion makes the scale consistent; it does not make unlike observations equally representative. Keep the source, gallon convention, trip type, and rounding precision so that a later reader can tell a transformed number from a new measurement.

Report the converted value honestly

Show the source value and its unit alongside the converted value: for example, 30 US MPG equals 7.84 L/100 km after display rounding. That notation prevents an Imperial-MPG source from silently acquiring a US-gallon conversion. Retain extra precision during a spreadsheet calculation, then round only for display or the tolerance of the planning decision. A 0.01 L/100 km difference has little practical meaning when the underlying figure is a rough dashboard average, while the distinction between 7.84 and 11.76 matters for a route budget. The converter changes representation, not the evidence quality of the original fuel-consumption observation.
