Reading the tyre code

For a 225/45 R17 tyre, 225 is nominal section width in millimetres, 45 is sidewall height as a percentage of that width, and 17 is rim diameter in inches. Sidewall height is width × aspect ratio; total diameter adds two sidewalls to the rim converted to millimetres.

Diameter for 225/45 R17

The sidewall is 225 × 0.45 = 101.25 mm. A 17-inch rim is 431.8 mm, so 431.8 + 2 × 101.25 gives 634.3 mm overall diameter. This is a nominal unladen dimension; a fitted tyre can differ by brand, pressure, load, and tread depth.

Aspect ratio is not a fixed height

The number 45 means 45 percent of the stated width, not 45 mm. Changing a tyre from 225/45 to 245/45 therefore makes the sidewall taller as well as wider. That is why two sizes with the same middle number can change rolling diameter.

Wheel size does not prove fitment

Overall diameter is only one clearance question. Wheel width, offset, suspension travel, brake clearance, steering lock, and bodywork space can prevent a physically larger or wider combination from fitting safely. A calculation cannot inspect a particular vehicle.

Speedometer and gearing effect

A larger rolling circumference travels farther per wheel revolution, so a speedometer calibrated for a smaller tyre can read low. The difference also changes effective gearing. Compare the old and proposed loaded rolling dimensions when accuracy or drivetrain behaviour matters.

Use the vehicle placard as the constraint

The tyre placard and owner's documentation specify approved sizes, load index, and speed rating. This page helps inspect geometric arithmetic; it does not approve a substitution or replace fitment advice from a qualified tyre professional.

Diameter is not tread width

The nominal 225 mm width is measured on a specified measuring rim, and the actual section can vary with rim width and tyre construction. Two tyres carrying the same printed size can therefore sit differently under a fender even when this diameter calculation matches.

Check both axles together

Where a vehicle uses different front and rear sizes, retain the approved rolling-radius relationship and follow the manufacturer specification. A diameter calculation for one tyre cannot determine whether an all-wheel-drive system accepts a mixed set or whether replacement tyres should be paired.

Turn sidewall dimensions into a circumference check

The 634.3 mm nominal diameter of 225/45 R17 corresponds to a nominal circumference of diameter times pi, about 1,992.7 mm. One wheel revolution therefore advances roughly 1.99 m before real-world tyre deflection and tread effects. Circumference is the more direct quantity for a wheel-speed sensor, yet it is derived here from an unloaded nominal diameter. Do not treat the calculated figure as a measured rolling circumference for calibration or drivetrain diagnosis.

Width and aspect ratio move different dimensions

A change from 225/45 R17 to 225/40 R17 leaves width and rim unchanged but lowers each sidewall by 11.25 mm, reducing nominal diameter by 22.5 mm. A change to 245/45 R17 instead adds 9 mm to each sidewall because 45 percent is now taken from a wider section; it also changes lateral clearance. Reading only the rim number misses both effects. Write the full old and proposed markings before deciding whether a change is geometrically small.

Load, pressure, and construction are outside the diameter equation

Two tyres can share a printed 225/45 R17 size yet differ in load index, speed symbol, reinforced construction, pressure requirement, tread pattern, and actual measured section. The vehicle placard and owner documentation specify the approved tyre size and cold inflation information for the vehicle configuration; NHTSA describes the placard as carrying those recommendation fields. A diameter calculation cannot verify that the replacement supports axle load or suits a wheel's permitted width.

Check clearance under movement, not only at rest

Static space in a parked wheel arch is not the smallest clearance the vehicle will see. Steering lock, suspension compression, body roll, chains, mud, wheel offset, and brake components can move the relevant surfaces. If a proposed change is close to an edge, consult vehicle-specific fitment guidance and inspect the complete assembly rather than relying on the difference between two nominal diameters. Geometry is useful for rejecting obviously unsuitable sizes; safety approval requires the vehicle context.

Read the complete marking before ordering

A dimension code is followed by information that may matter as much as its three geometric components: load index, speed symbol, construction, and sometimes XL or run-flat designation. The calculator has no field for those properties because they are not inputs to nominal diameter. Copy them from the existing approved tyre and compare them with the vehicle documentation and the candidate tyre's manufacturer data. A close diameter result cannot compensate for inadequate load capacity, unsuitable speed capability, or an incompatible wheel specification.

Use the number as a first screening step

Measure the complete existing wheel and tyre specification before comparing alternatives, including the full sidewall marking and any vehicle-specific restrictions. A nominal diameter calculation can identify a large change in rolling geometry, but a small percentage result is not proof of clearance or approval. Ask a qualified tyre professional or use the vehicle maker's fitment information when load, speed, braking hardware, wheel width, offset, all-wheel-drive requirements, or legal approval are relevant. Check pressures cold according to the placard after any approved change. This page describes dimensions; it cannot assess a mounted assembly under load or motion.
