Convert clocks before subtracting
Each clock time is converted to minutes after midnight, then the start is subtracted from the end. The default 09:15 to 17:45 becomes 555 to 1065 minutes, a difference of 510 minutes or 8.5 hours. An end earlier than the start is treated as the following day.
Why 8.5 hours is not 8:50
Clock notation uses sixty minutes per hour, not one hundred. A duration of 510 minutes is 8 hours and 30 minutes, which can be written as 8.5 decimal hours. Reading the decimal as eight hours fifty minutes creates a twenty-minute error in a timesheet or booking.
Crossing midnight is an explicit assumption
A shift from 22:30 to 06:15 produces an overnight span because the end clock is earlier. That is sensible for one continuous interval, but it cannot distinguish a night shift from a mistaken AM/PM entry. Check the date when a result unexpectedly approaches a full day.
Breaks and interruptions need separate treatment
Elapsed time includes a lunch break, an unpaid interruption, travel, or time when a machine was stopped. It is not automatically paid time or productive time. Subtract known breaks separately and keep their start and end times if an audit may be needed.
Time zones change an event interval
Two times recorded in different zones cannot be compared as local clock readings. Convert both to a common zone or an instant such as UTC first. Daylight-saving transitions can also create a repeated or missing local hour that a simple four-field clock model cannot represent.

Use this page for elapsed local clock time in one continuous interval. It does not calculate a multi-day schedule, payroll premium, travel itinerary across zones, or legal rest compliance. Those questions need dates, locations, and the applicable work rules.
Practical check for this result
Record times in a consistent format such as 09:15 and 17:45 rather than mixing a twelve-hour label with a twenty-four-hour one. A missing AM or PM can transform a short appointment into an overnight calculation. When the result feeds a bill or attendance record, retain the original timestamps rather than only the converted total.
Minutes prevent base-ten mistakes
Convert 09:15 to 9 times 60 plus 15, which is 555 minutes. Convert 17:45 to 1,065 minutes. Their difference is 510 minutes, and 510 divided by 60 is 8 hours with 30 minutes remaining. Decimal 8.5 is another way to store that duration, but it must not be read as 8:50. Keeping the minute total during the calculation avoids treating clock minutes as hundredths of an hour.
Overnight intervals need a date assumption
For 22:30 to 06:15, the end reading is smaller than the start reading. Adding 1,440 minutes to the end gives 1,815; subtracting 1,350 produces 465 minutes, or 7 hours 45 minutes. That calculation assumes one midnight crossing. It cannot tell whether the end was entered with the wrong AM/PM label or whether several days passed. A date-aware record is needed whenever either possibility is plausible.
Separate elapsed, paid, and billable time
A nine-hour presence can include an unpaid lunch, a paid rest break, a client-billable task, and travel that is treated differently by a contract. The clock difference is only the outer interval. Create a ledger of each excluded or separately rated segment before using a total for payroll, invoicing, or compliance. Subtracting a guessed break after the fact is less reliable than recording its actual start and finish.
Daylight-saving changes alter elapsed minutes
A local clock can skip an hour in spring or repeat one in autumn. A shift written as 01:30 to 03:30 may last one, two, or another number of elapsed hours depending on date and location. This four-field calculator deliberately has no zone database, so its simple result should not settle transport, system, or wage records across a clock change. Use offset-bearing timestamps or the official timekeeping system for those cases.
A shift-span audit
A technician records 07:40 as the start and 16:10 as the end. Convert the first time to 460 minutes and the second to 970 minutes; the difference is 510 minutes, or 8 hours 30 minutes. If there was a 35-minute unpaid meal, the paid interval is 475 minutes, which is 7 hours 55 minutes or about 7.9167 decimal hours. Writing 7.55 would be wrong because the digits after the decimal are not clock minutes. The example also shows why a time sheet should preserve the original punches. A payroll system may round 07:40 or 16:10 under a stated policy, but that policy is a separate operation applied after the actual elapsed span is known.
Keep minutes beside decimal hours
If a result is exported as decimal hours, keep the minute value nearby. The pair, such as 510 minutes and 8.5 hours, lets a reader distinguish a valid decimal conversion from a clock-style transcription error without recomputing the entire interval. This is useful when one system shows hours to four decimal places while another requires an hours-and-minutes display. For 7 hours 55 minutes, the decimal is 7 plus 55 divided by 60, or about 7.9167—not 7.55. Showing both forms prevents a spreadsheet total from silently drifting away from the original clock record.
Use the right clock for the task
A stopwatch interval, a calendar appointment, and a payroll shift can all begin and end at similar-looking times while using different rules. A stopwatch normally wants elapsed seconds; an appointment needs dates and zones; payroll needs breaks and policy. Select the record system that owns the event before treating a local-clock subtraction as final.
