What is the exact age for a birthday that already passed?
Birth date 22 July 1990; reference date 23 August 2026. Since 22 July falls before 23 August in the calendar year, the birthday has already passed, so the full year count applies: 2026 − 1990 = 36 years. From the most recent birthday, 22 July 2026, to 23 August 2026 is 1 month and 1 day. Result: 36 years, 1 month, 1 day. Now take birth date 10 December 1990 with the same 23 August 2026 reference: 10 December has not yet occurred this year, so the naive 2026 − 1990 = 36 is wrong. The correct year count is 35, counted from the last birthday, 10 December 2025; from there to 23 August 2026 is 8 months and 13 days, giving 35 years, 8 months, 13 days.
How do I handle a birthday that has not happened yet?
Compare the birth month and day with the reference month and day. If the reference date falls on or after the birth month and day, the year difference alone is the completed year count; if it falls before, subtract one extra year and count from the previous birthday instead. Then count whole months from the most recent birthday to the reference date, and finally count remaining days. A birth date of 29 February, which does not exist most years
Someone born 29 February 2000, measured on 23 August 2026, needs a defined anniversary for the years when 29 February does not exist. Treating the anniversary as 28 February gives 26 years, 5 months, 26 days. Treating it as 1 March instead gives 26 years, 5 months, 22 days — 4 days apart from the first convention, purely from which date stands in for the missing 29 February. Neither convention is universal, so a system computing this age should state which one it uses.
How to check the result by adding it back to the birth date
A computed age of 36 years, 1 month, 1 day should return to the reference date when added back to the birth date, in the same order the parts were counted: 22 July 1990 plus 36 years is 22 July 2026; plus 1 month is 22 August 2026; plus 1 day is 23 August 2026 — the original reference date exactly. If the reconstructed date does not match the reference date, one of the three components was miscounted.
Age in total whole months, without the days remainder
Some forms ask for age in whole months rather than years-months-days. For the same 36-year, 1-month, 1-day result, the whole-months figure is 36 × 12 + 1 = 433 completed months, with 1 leftover day not represented in that number. A total-months figure and a years-months-days figure describe the same underlying age at different resolutions; converting between them means multiplying the year count by 12, not re-deriving age from scratch.
How this differs from a raw day count of someone’s life
From 22 July 1990 to 23 August 2026 is 13,181 total elapsed days — the same kind of count used in the date-difference guide, but for a birth date and today instead of two arbitrary dates. Dividing 13,181 by 365.25 gives about 36.09 years, close to but not identical to the 36 years, 1 month, 1 day from the birthday-relative method, because a flat 365.25-day year is an average, not the exact mix of 28-, 29-, 30-, and 31-day months this specific span actually contains.
The age gap between two people, not one person’s age today
The same year-month-day method also answers a different, often-confused question: how much older one person is than another, using two birth dates instead of a birth date and today. Someone born 3 November 1988 is 1 year, 8 months, 19 days older than someone born 22 July 1990, found the same way — check whether the later birth date’s month-and-day has occurred relative to the earlier one within the elapsed years, then count the remaining months and days. Both people’s ages relative to today change every day; the gap between their birth dates never does.
Checking age as of a future date, not today
The same year-then-month-then-day method answers an eligibility question just as well as a “how old is someone today” question, by substituting a future reference date. Someone born 15 March 2010, checked against 1 September 2027, is 17, not 18: 1 September falls before 15 March in the calendar year, so the birthday has not yet occurred as of that reference date, and the completed-year count stays at 2027 − 2010 − 1 = 17. Their 18th birthday only arrives on 15 March 2028, about six and a half months after the 1 September 2027 check date.
