A U.S. cup is 8 fluid ounces, so four cups equal 32 fluid ounces or about 946 mL. Using 60 g coffee with 960 g water gives a 1:16 ratio exactly: 60 × 16 = 960. A coffee-maker carafe may label a “cup” as 4 or 5 fluid ounces instead. Four 5-ounce machine cups are only 20 fluid ounces, about 591 mL; at 1:16 they need about 37 g coffee, not 60 g.
Worked example with numbers
First identify whether the question means four drinking cups or four markings on a machine. Measure the selected water amount by mass, then divide by the desired ratio. A scale is more repeatable than tablespoons because a tablespoon of finely ground coffee and a tablespoon of coarse coffee need not have the same mass.
How to make the calculation
Keep a simple record: 960 g water, 60 g coffee, medium grind, filter brewer, and the result. If the drink is too intense, try 960 g water and 58 g coffee before changing several variables. If the flavour is hollow or sour, examine grind and brew time as well as dose. The grounds mass sets the recipe; retained water in the grounds means the served beverage will weigh less than the water put in.
Check the units and assumptions
Do not assume every package scoop is 10 g or every carafe cup is 8 ounces. Do not multiply a ratio by 4 without deciding what one cup means. Do not use the final liquid in the mugs as the water input, because grounds and the brewer retain part of the original water. Do not call 60 g mandatory: it is a worked starting point, not a taste or health prescription.
Common mistakes
This workflow suits brewed coffee where water and dry coffee can be weighed. It does not determine an espresso recipe, a cold-brew steep time, a percolator setting, or caffeine content. A person limiting caffeine or following clinical advice should use product information and professional guidance rather than infer a dose from water volume. The calculation only makes the brewing quantity explicit.
When this result does not apply
The Specialty Coffee Association names 55 g coffee per 1 L water as a starting point in its Certified Home Brewer requirements. That reference is close to 1:18, while 1:15 and 1:16 are useful stronger starting ratios; the numbers must be stated rather than hidden behind “cups.”
