How ISO week numbers work, and why week 1 is not always the first calendar week

Under ISO 8601, week 1 of a year is the week — running Monday to Sunday — that contains that year’s first Thursday, which is the same week that contains 4 January. For 2026, 1 January falls on a Thursday, so that week is ISO week 1 of 2026, running from Monday 29 December 2025 through Sunday 4 January 2026 — meaning 29–31 December 2025 belong to ISO week 1 of 2026, not to 2025.

What is the worked ISO week for 1 January 2026?

Take 1 January 2026. It falls on a Thursday. Because ISO weeks run Monday–Sunday and week 1 is defined as the week containing the year’s first Thursday, the Monday that starts that week is 29 December 2025, four days earlier. So the ISO week containing 1 January 2026 is labelled 2026-W01, and it includes 29, 30, and 31 December 2025 as its first three days. Compare 1 January 2025, which falls on a Wednesday: the Thursday of that same week is 2 January 2025, so 2025-W01 runs from Monday 30 December 2024 to Sunday 5 January 2025 — a different, smaller three-day carryover into the new year.

How do I find an ISO week number myself?

Two equivalent ways to find an ISO week number: locate the Thursday of the same Monday-to-Sunday week as the target date, then count how many full weeks separate that Thursday from 4 January of its own year; or check whether the target date falls within four days either side of a 1 January that lands on a Thursday. The date difference calculator reports the calendar date for any two points; converting that into an ISO week number requires the Monday-start, first-Thursday rule described above rather than simply dividing the day-of-year by 7.

How do I check an ISO week-year boundary?

A reverse check: because ISO weeks run Monday to Sunday and are numbered so that no week is split between two ISO years, the last ISO week of any year must contain 28 December — a fixed calendar date, unlike 1 January, that always falls inside the final ISO week regardless of which weekday the year starts on. For 2026, 28 December falls in week 53, so 2026 is a 53-week ISO year; for 2025, 28 December falls in week 52, a 52-week year — confirming that 2025-W01 and 2026-W01 do not both start with the same size carryover from the previous December.

What mistakes produce a wrong ISO week number?

The most common mistake is assuming week 1 always starts on or after 1 January — as shown above, 2026-W01 begins on 29 December 2025, three calendar days before the new year, so a report that groups “week 1” strictly by matching calendar year excludes those three days incorrectly. A second is confusing the ISO week-numbering year with the calendar year printed on 1 January or 31 December; 31 December 2026 falls in ISO week 53 of 2026, but 1 January 2027 falls in that same ISO week 53 of 2026, not week 1 of 2027 — the ISO year label and the calendar year can disagree at both ends of December/January. A third is using a Sunday-start week convention (common in the United States) and reusing an ISO week number from a Monday-start source without converting; the two systems can number the same physical week differently near a year boundary.

What does ISO week numbering not cover?

This method computes the ISO 8601 week-numbering date only. It does not apply to a US-style “week of the year” convention that starts weeks on Sunday and treats 1 January as always falling in week 1, to a retail 4-4-5 fiscal calendar, or to a payroll or academic “week number” defined by a specific institution’s own start date — those systems use different rules and can assign a different number to the same physical week.

The 2027 row is the sharpest edge case: 1 January 2027 itself is labelled ISO week 53 of 2026, not week 1 of 2027, because it falls on a Friday — outside the four-day window around 4 January that would place it in 2027’s own week 1.

Why some years have 53 ISO weeks and most have 52

An ISO year has 53 weeks precisely when 1 January falls on a Thursday, or when the year is a leap year and 1 January falls on a Wednesday — both conditions place an extra Thursday-anchored week at one end of the year. Checking a run of years directly: 2020 (a leap year starting on a Wednesday) and 2026 (starting on a Thursday) both run to week 53, while 2021 through 2025 and 2027 through 2031 all run to a standard 52 weeks. Roughly 71 years in every 400-year Gregorian cycle are 53-week ISO years — the pattern follows directly from which weekday 1 January lands on, the same weekday arithmetic used in the day-of-week guide linked above.

Reconciling a spreadsheet ISO-week formula with a manual count

A spreadsheet’s ISOWEEKNUM-style function applied to 31 December 2026 returns 53, and applied to 4 January 2027 returns 1 — two dates only four days apart landing in different ISO years, which is correct behaviour, not a formula error. Manually confirming the second figure: 4 January 2027 falls on a Monday, and since 4 January is always inside week 1 by definition, the ISO week label is unambiguously 2027-W01, matching the spreadsheet output and demonstrating that the “always contains 4 January” rule is a fast manual check against any software result.

Where ISO week numbers matter in practice, and where a different convention is used instead

Payroll systems, European statistical reporting, manufacturing schedules, and construction and shipping planning documents commonly use ISO week numbers specifically because the Monday-start, no-split-week rule gives every week a single unambiguous seven-day span with a matching business-day count, which a plain calendar-month or Sunday-start week does not guarantee. A US retail or academic calendar more often numbers weeks from 1 January regardless of weekday, which is a legitimate but different convention — the two produce different week numbers for the same physical days near most year boundaries, so a week number copied from one system into a form or database expecting the other should be re-derived rather than assumed to match.

Counting total days in an ISO year from its week count

A 52-week ISO year contains exactly 52 × 7 = 364 days, and a 53-week ISO year contains 53 × 7 = 371 days — both counted purely in whole weeks, unlike a calendar year, which runs 365 or 366 days depending on the separate leap-year rule and does not divide evenly by 7. The 2026 ISO year, a 53-week year established earlier in this guide, runs from its Monday start, 29 December 2025, through the Sunday that ends its final week, 3 January 2027 — 371 calendar days counted inclusively (both endpoints included). Subtracting the two dates instead, as a plain date-difference calculation does, gives 370, the count of days *elapsed* between them; the extra day is simply the difference between counting a span inclusively and counting the gap between its two endpoints, the same distinction covered in the inclusive vs exclusive date-counting guide.
