Measure floor area, wall area, and room volume separately because they answer different questions. A rectangular room 5.0 m long, 4.0 m wide, and 2.5 m high has 20.0 m² of floor area, 45.0 m² of gross wall area, and 50.0 m³ of volume. Multiplying only length by width cannot supply paint area or air volume.
Worked example with numbers
Sketch a 5.0 m by 4.0 m room with a 2.5 m ceiling. Floor area is 5.0 × 4.0 = 20.0 m². The perimeter is 2 × (5.0 + 4.0) = 18.0 m; gross wall area is 18.0 × 2.5 = 45.0 m². Volume is floor area × height, or 20.0 × 2.5 = 50.0 m³. A 0.9 m by 2.0 m door occupies 1.8 m² of wall surface, but it does not change the room’s floor area.
How to make the calculation
Measure finished inside faces when estimating floor covering, and measure each wall separately when recesses, chimney breasts, or sloping ceilings exist. Keep metres with metres and feet with feet; convert before multiplying mixed units. Check the units and assumptions
Area is a two-dimensional surface measured in square units; volume is a three-dimensional space measured in cubic units. A 20 m² floor is not 20 m³ of air. When a measurement is taken in feet, write ft² or ft³ explicitly. The U.S. Geological Survey lists 1 m² as 10.76 ft² and 1 m³ as 35.31 ft³, so a linear conversion factor cannot be reused unchanged for area or volume.
Common mistakes
Do not deduct doors and windows from a floor calculation. Do not use external building dimensions when the quantity is interior paint or flooring. Do not multiply a perimeter by height and call it volume. Another common error is measuring wall length at skirting-board level where a wall is out of square, then assuming the ceiling length is identical without checking.
When this result does not apply
A rectangle is an approximation. Bay windows, curved walls, open stairwells, vaulted ceilings, built-in furniture, and irregular alcoves need a segmented sketch or a professional survey when accuracy matters. This guide also does not establish ventilation capacity, heating load, occupancy limits, or code compliance from volume alone.
