Compare mulch bags and bulk mulch by converting every label to the same volume unit before comparing quantities. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, so a 2-cubic-foot bag represents 2 ÷ 27 = 0.074 cubic yard; 14 such bags contain 28 cubic feet, or about 1.04 cubic yards. Bag count is a package count, not a depth recommendation.
Worked example with numbers
A bed 6.0 m by 2.0 m at 0.08 m deep needs 0.96 m³. In US customary units, a 108 ft² bed at 3 inches deep needs 27 ft³ because 108 × 0.25 = 27. If bags are labelled 2 ft³, divide 27 by 2 and round up to 14 bags. The same physical volume is 1 yd³ because 27 ft³ ÷ 27 = 1 yd³.
How to make the calculation
Measure bed length and width, then measure intended settled depth with a ruler. Multiply to get volume before looking at packaging. Convert every product label to ft³, yd³, L, or m³ consistently; do not compare the printed bag weight with bulk volume. Check the units and assumptions
Volume measures space, while bag weight measures mass and changes with moisture and product composition. A cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft, or 27 ft³. A 2-ft³ bag is therefore not “two yards” and not two square feet: its depth is unspecified until it is spread across a known area.
Common mistakes
Do not multiply bag count by 3 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards; divide total cubic feet by 27. Do not use an unopened bag’s outside dimensions as its mulch volume. Do not spread a calculated volume at double the intended depth over half the bed and assume the estimate was wrong. Rake and measure several points after settling.

Packaging comparison does not decide the suitable mulch type, bed preparation, plant health, pest control, or fire safety near structures. Settling, delivery access, bag compaction, and manufacturer yield can affect a real project. Follow local horticultural guidance for plant-specific depth and keep combustible material away from ignition risks.
