Is a rise from 20% to 25% a 5% increase?
If a survey rate rises from 20% to 25%, subtract 20 from 25 to obtain 5 percentage points. For relative change, calculate (25 minus 20) divided by 20 times 100: 25%. If the rate falls from 25% to 20%, the change is minus 5 percentage points and minus 20% relative, because the starting denominator is now 25.
How do percentage points differ from percent change?
Use percentage points when both numbers are already percentages: new percent minus old percent. Use relative percentage change when the question asks how large the movement is compared with its starting level: (new minus old) divided by old times 100. How do I calculate a relative percentage increase?
A percentage is a part per hundred; a percentage point is a one-unit difference on that percent scale. A rate from 2% to 3% rises by 1 percentage point but by 50% relative. A rate from 80% to 81% also rises by 1 point but by 1.25% relative. The same point change therefore has different relative meaning at different baselines.
Why does the baseline change the answer?
Do not write “up 5%” when the calculation was only 25% minus 20%. Do not divide by the new value when describing growth from the old value. Do not calculate relative change from a zero baseline: division by zero is undefined. Do not add percentage changes across different populations without confirming they use the same denominator and period.
When should a percentage change not be interpreted alone?
These calculations describe a reported rate, not its reliability or cause. Sample size, weighting, definitions, rounding, and confidence intervals can matter before interpreting a survey, test result, conversion rate, or risk statement. A percentage-point arithmetic result cannot establish a causal effect.
