Population vs sample standard deviation: which one should you calculate?

Use population standard deviation when the data are the entire population you want to describe; use sample standard deviation when the data are a sample used to estimate a larger population. For values 2, 4, and 6, population standard deviation is about 1.63, while sample standard deviation is 2.00 because the sample formula divides by n−1 rather than n.

Which standard deviation formula do I need?

The mean of 2, 4, and 6 is 4. Squared deviations are 4, 0, and 4, totaling 8. Treating all three as the full population gives variance 8/3 and standard deviation √(8/3) = 1.63. Treating them as a sample gives variance 8/(3−1) = 4 and standard deviation 2.00. The data did not change; the intended claim did.

What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?

Ask first whether every member of the defined group is present. If yes, divide the sum of squared deviations by N for population standard deviation. If the values are a sample intended to estimate a wider group, divide by n−1 before the square root. The standard-deviation calculator provides a numerical screen, but label the selected definition in the result.

Why does the sample formula divide by n minus 1?

Population notation commonly uses σ and N; sample notation commonly uses s and n. The sample correction increases the variance whenever n is finite and the values vary. A zero standard deviation remains zero under either formula because every value equals the mean. Do not choose the smaller number because it appears more favourable.

How do I choose the population for a calculation?

Do not call a convenience list a population merely because it contains all observations available today. Do not apply the sample formula to a complete, closed inventory without a reason. Do not confuse standard deviation with standard error, which describes variability of an estimated mean. Do not omit missing values silently, since the population definition may change.

When is standard deviation not enough to interpret data?

Standard deviation reports spread around a mean; it does not prove normality, identify outliers, measure accuracy, or make a sample representative. Financial, medical, educational, and safety decisions may require a documented sampling design and uncertainty method beyond one descriptive statistic.
