Room size alone cannot correctly size an air conditioner because cooling load also changes with sun, insulation, windows, ceiling height, people, appliances, humidity, and outdoor design conditions. A 20 m² room can need different capacity in two homes even when the floor dimensions match.
What size AC do I need for my room?
Two rooms are each 20 m². Room A has a 2.4 m ceiling, shaded windows, good insulation, and one occupant; its volume is 48 m³. Room B has a 3.0 m ceiling, afternoon sun, a large unshaded window, three occupants, and a computer producing heat; its volume is 60 m³ before the other gains are considered. Multiplying floor area by a single rule-of-thumb rate gives both rooms the same answer even though their cooling conditions are different.
