Converting calorie shares to grams
Protein and carbohydrate provide four kcal per gram; fat provides nine. With 2,200 kcal split 30% protein, 40% carbohydrate, and 30% fat, the calculation gives 165 g protein, 220 g carbohydrate, and about 73.3 g fat. The percentages must add to 100 for the allocation to describe the full calorie target.
Rounding the gram plan
Gram targets are commonly rounded for meal planning. Rounding 73.3 g fat to 73 g changes energy slightly, and food labels have their own rounding conventions. Recalculate the total energy from the final gram targets if a precise nutrition prescription depends on it.
Macros leave out many nutrients
Two menus can match protein, carbohydrate, and fat grams while differing greatly in fibre, vitamins, minerals, sodium, alcohol, allergens, and food safety. This arithmetic cannot determine whether a pattern meets medical, cultural, ethical, or performance needs.
There is no universal split
A 30/40/30 split is not a universal recommendation. Training volume, preference, medical conditions, digestive tolerance, and prescribed diets can call for another distribution. The page merely converts a chosen calorie share into grams using the stated energy values.
Connect the target to foods
After setting a scenario, compare it with the nutrition labels or weighed food records that will supply it. Keep units consistent: a cooked-food serving and a dry-food serving can have very different grams even when both are described casually as one cup.
Check the arithmetic in context
The displayed 165 g protein supplies 660 kcal, 220 g carbohydrate supplies 880 kcal, and 73.3 g fat supplies about 660 kcal. Together they reconstruct the 2,200 kcal input, allowing for display rounding. This reverse check is useful when edited percentages no longer total 100. It also reveals why a macro target cannot be compared with a food plan until the food quantities and label basis are known.
Alcohol provides energy but is not assigned to protein, carbohydrate, or fat by this split; nutrition labels and tracking systems may handle it differently. Fibre treatment can also vary by labelling system. If those details are material, use the same food-label convention throughout instead of assuming every calorie belongs to one of three macro fields.
