Estimate the number of drywall sheets needed to cover a wall area from the wall and sheet dimensions.

Sheet count begins with board coverage

A 50 m² wall area increased by 10% allowance becomes 55 m². Dividing by 2.88 m² per sheet gives 19.1, so the order rounds to 20 boards. The round-up is necessary because boards are whole panels, while the stated sheet area assumes its full face can be placed without unusable cuts.

Orientation changes offcuts

A 1.2 m by 2.4 m board can run vertically or horizontally. Ceiling height, stud spacing, openings, and the desired number of joints determine which orientation makes sense. Two layouts with equal wall area can use different numbers of boards because one leaves narrow strips that cannot be reused.

Openings do not always save a board

A door or window removes finished wall area, but sheets may still have to bridge it before the opening is cut. The surrounding pieces can be valuable for short returns or can become waste, depending on the layout. Mark openings on a board plan before subtracting them from the purchase quantity.

Board count excludes finishing materials

Screws, adhesive, joint tape, compound, corner bead, insulation, vapour control, and fire-rated detailing have their own specifications and quantities. A standard board area cannot confirm acoustic, fire, moisture, or impact performance. Select the correct board type for the room before doing a coverage calculation.

Practical boundary

Use this page to estimate whole drywall sheets for a measured wall surface and chosen panel size. It does not design framing, set joint locations, calculate ceilings, or verify code requirements. Preserve a scaled elevation with board direction and allowance when asking a supplier or installer to check the order.

Joint layout protects the finished face

Avoid aligning vertical joints across adjacent rows where the framing and board system require staggered seams. Mark board edges, door corners, and service penetrations before cutting; a joint ending at an opening corner can crack more readily. Store boards flat and dry, then follow the selected board manufacturer’s fixing pattern. Coverage arithmetic counts panels but does not decide a sound joint layout.
