Panels divide a straight fence line
A 30 m straight boundary divided by 2 m panels needs 15 panel spaces. A run with 15 spaces normally needs 16 end-and-intermediate posts because a post sits at both ends. This assumes every bay can use the stated nominal panel width without a gate, corner, step, or special closing section.
Posts locate the real geometry
Corners, changes in direction, and gates need their own structural posts even when the panel count appears unchanged. Measure the line between post centres, not merely the legal boundary on a plan. A slight bend may require a shorter bay; forcing full panels to fit can leave the final post in the wrong place.
Slopes need a chosen method
Stepped panels keep each bay level but leave triangular gaps under a slope. Racked panels follow a grade but depend on a system designed to rack. The same horizontal length can therefore consume different fittings and cut material. Decide the slope treatment before trusting a count based on flat ground.
Foundations govern durability
Post depth, concrete, drainage, wind exposure, soil, and fence height influence whether a line remains upright. Counting 16 posts does not size them or determine their embedment. Check local boundary rules, utility locations, and manufacturer instructions before digging or ordering structural components.
