The glycaemic-load formula
Glycaemic load is available carbohydrate in a serving multiplied by glycaemic index, divided by 100. Available carbohydrate generally means total carbohydrate minus fibre where that label system includes fibre in total carbohydrate. GI is measured for a particular food under controlled conditions. GL belongs to a stated portion, not permanently to every bowl or fruit.
A portion changes the result
A serving with 30 g available carbohydrate and GI 55 has GL 30 × 55 ÷ 100 = 16.5. Half the serving contains 15 g and has GL 8.25 even though GI remains 55. This is why ‘high GI’ alone does not describe the load of an amount actually eaten. Portion carbohydrate is the required input, not the food’s total plate weight.
Use carbohydrate, not sugar or grams of food
A 200 g soup can contain far less available carbohydrate than 200 g bread because much of the soup is water. Copy the carbohydrate and fibre figures from the exact portion or calculate them from a label. Sugar grams are not a substitute for available carbohydrate because starch can contribute substantially. Check the label convention used in its country before subtracting fibre.
GI is variable evidence
Ripeness, variety, milling, cooking, cooling, acidity, fat, protein, and the rest of a mixed meal can change response. A published GI can describe one preparation rather than your brand or recipe. Use a documented nearby value and avoid false decimals. A mixed dish is hard to reduce to one GI without ingredient-level information.
Useful but incomplete comparison
GL can compare portions of carbohydrate foods or make an educational food record. It is not a meal-quality score. Fibre, protein, fat, sodium, energy density, allergens, cultural eating patterns, and medication timing matter independently. A lower number is not automatically a better choice for every person or context.
Not recipe calories
The recipe-calorie page estimates kilocalories from food energy and portions. This page needs available carbohydrate and GI. Calories cannot be converted into GL: oil adds energy with almost no carbohydrate, while carbohydrate can be substantial at a moderate calorie total. Neither output is a dietary prescription.
Medical limitation
GL does not calculate insulin, medicine, glucose targets, or a safe serving size. People with diabetes, hypoglycaemia, pregnancy-related glucose concerns, or an eating disorder should follow their personal care plan and ask a clinician or dietitian about food changes. Entered values remain local, but the calculator has no medical history or current glucose reading.
