The physical relationship

For a rectangular pool, volume in cubic metres is length × width × average water depth. One cubic metre contains 1,000 litres. Product amount is pool volume × the label dose per cubic metre × the selected multiplier. The multiplier is a way to reproduce a label's normal or shock instruction; it is not a chemical recommendation.

A checked case

A 7.5 m by 3.2 m pool with an average water depth of 1.25 m holds 30 m³, or 30,000 L. If the product label says 12 g per m³ for the intended treatment, a normal dose is 30 × 12 = 360 g. Selecting a 1.5 label-directed multiplier displays 540 g. The calculation changes instantly if measured depth or the exact label instruction changes.

Useful planning use

Use it after measuring a regular pool, converting a product instruction written per cubic metre, or checking whether a container has enough material for a labelled treatment.

Failure modes in this measurement

Using wall depth rather than average water depth overstates a sloped pool. Steps, a spa shelf, an overflow channel, and a free-form outline reduce the rectangular approximation. Most importantly, a dose printed for one product is not interchangeable with another product that has a similar name. Product concentration, current water test results, stabiliser, pH, temperature, and bather load affect safe treatment choices.

Field check before acting

Measure waterline dimensions, not the outside shell. For a sloping bottom, average several depth measurements; for a round pool use its manufacturer capacity or a circle-specific calculation instead. Read the label’s units carefully: grams per cubic metre and millilitres per thousand litres can describe very different products. Add chemicals exactly as their instructions require, with circulation and handling precautions.
