Pitch turns plan area into roof surface
A 10 m by 8 m footprint has 80 m² in plan. Dividing by the cosine of a 30 degree pitch gives about 92.38 m² of sloped surface; adding 10% produces roughly 101.62 m². The cosine adjustment applies to the measured roof plane, not to a vague estimate of the building’s floor area.
Eaves and ridges change the measured shape
The footprint may exclude overhangs, porches, dormers, valleys, and hips. Each roof plane should be measured from drawings or a safe survey, then summed. A simple gable calculation is not reliable for a roof with intersecting slopes or a large projecting eave.
Waste follows the covering pattern
Sheet lengths, shingle exposure, tile gauge, valleys, and ridge cuts determine waste differently. A metal roof with long continuous sheets may waste little on one plane but require costly trims; small tiles around a valley can create many offcuts. Use the product layout rather than a universal allowance when ordering.
Surface area is not structural design
The result cannot assess rafters, snow and wind load, ventilation, underlay, flashing, drainage, or safe access. A roof may have the right area for a covering and still need repairs or a different specification. Work at height and structural changes require appropriate professional and safety controls.
