The physical relationship
Required lamp output is floor area × target lux ÷ maintenance factor. Lux means lumens reaching one square metre; the maintenance factor allows for shade losses, dirt, ageing LEDs, and light absorbed by dark finishes.
A checked case
A 4.8 m by 3.6 m study has 17.28 m² of floor. At a desk-oriented target of 300 lux it needs 5,184 lumens on the work plane. With a 0.80 maintenance factor, 5,184 ÷ 0.80 = 6,480 lumens of rated lamp output. Four 1,620-lumen lamps meet that arithmetic target.
Useful planning use
It is useful when comparing bulb packaging, planning several ceiling fittings, or deciding whether a work area needs task lighting in addition to general light.
Failure modes in this measurement
A common failure is entering watts as though watts measured light. They measure electrical power, while lumen output differs greatly between lamp types. Another is using floor area for a wall display or kitchen counter: the relevant plane is where the task happens. A low hanging pendant can put useful light on a table but leave the room perimeter dim.
What makes this quantity different
The room-area page returns square metres only. This page converts area and a chosen illuminance target into an approximate lamp-lumen requirement; it does not calculate wiring load, glare rating, emergency lighting, or compliance with a local building code.
Field check before acting
Measure the actual room, identify the activity, and read lumens from the exact lamp package. If the result seems high, split it into ambient and task light instead of choosing one bare, dazzling source. Diffusers, beam angle, ceiling height, wall colour, and furniture placement can make two rooms with identical floor area feel markedly different.
Limits of the model
The value is a planning estimate, not a photometric design. A lux meter on the intended surface is the way to verify a finished installation. Electrical changes, damp-location fittings, and safety clearances must follow the equipment instructions and applicable electrical rules.
Measure the working plane
For a desk, bench, or kitchen counter, place a light meter or reference surface where the task actually occurs. A ceiling fixture can satisfy a nominal room-lumen total while casting a shadow from the user’s body or cabinet. Aim and spacing are therefore checked after installation, not inferred from lamp packaging.
