Measure the paintable surface
Paint is bought for coated wall area, not floor area. For a rectangular room the gross wall area is 2 × (length + width) × height. Subtract doors, windows, fitted wardrobes, or tiled sections that will not receive paint. The calculator then multiplies that net area by the number of coats, divides by the label coverage in square metres per litre, and adds the chosen reserve. Ceiling paint is a separate surface: its area is length × width, so include it only when it is being painted and add it to the openings field as a negative subtraction only if the field label expressly says so.
A room-paint calculation with real numbers
Take a 5.2 m by 3.8 m bedroom with 2.6 m walls. Its perimeter is 18 m and its gross wall area is 46.8 m². A door of 0.9 × 2.0 m and two windows of 1.2 × 1.4 m remove 5.16 m², leaving 41.64 m². Two coats require 83.28 m² of coverage. A tin labelled 11 m²/L needs 7.57 L before reserve; with a 10% reserve the purchase quantity is 8.33 L. Because tins are sold in set sizes, that means a 10 L tin, not an imaginary 8.33 L container.
Why coverage on a tin is not a guarantee
The coverage number is usually a controlled estimate for a smooth, prepared surface and a stated film thickness. New plaster, bare drywall, repaired patches, porous masonry, dark-to-light colour changes, rough texture, roller loading, and paint left in trays all increase consumption. Primer is not simply another coat of finish paint: its label has its own coverage and it solves a different absorption problem. If the wall is strongly textured, make a small test patch, measure the paint used over a known area, and replace the label coverage with that observed rate.
Coats, colour and sheen
Two finish coats are common because the first coat establishes coverage and the second evens colour and sheen, but the product instructions control. A white wall covered by a similar white may need less effort than a saturated red covered by pale paint, while some high-hide paints specify fewer coats. Do not enter one coat merely to make the shopping list cheaper if the chosen product calls for two. Conversely, do not add a third coat to the same field when it is actually primer plus two finish coats; calculate primer and finish separately so both coverage rates remain visible.
The reserve is for continuity, not mystery waste
A 5–15% reserve accounts for cut-ins at edges, a little roller loss, and later touch-ups. It is especially useful when a colour is mixed to order or comes from a batch where a later match may vary. Large reserves do not fix an uncertain measurement. If a room has a staircase, angled ceiling, alcove, or extensive trim, divide it into rectangles and triangles and total their actual surfaces. Record the dimensions and colour code on the remaining tin; that is more useful than relying on a rounded calculator output years later.
Frequent measurement mistakes
The common error is multiplying length by width and calling that wall area; that finds the floor. Another is subtracting every opening even though doors or window frames will be painted. Measure the opening that remains unpainted, not the whole architectural opening. Metres and centimetres also cause a hundredfold error: 80 cm is 0.80 m before it enters a metre-based formula. Finally, check whether label coverage is quoted per litre, per gallon, or per coat. A calculator can expose those inputs, but it cannot infer a unit from a bare number.
Where the estimate is useful
Use this result to compare tin sizes, budget a room, or check a contractor material list. It is not a specification for exterior coatings, fire-rated systems, lead-safe preparation, or moisture remediation. Exterior walls need deductions and additions for elevations, trim, render texture, and weather; bathrooms and kitchens may need a coating system selected for humidity and cleaning. Surface preparation, safe sanding, ventilation, masking, and drying times are jobs governed by the product data sheet rather than by an area formula.
How this differs from the basic paint page
The basic Paint Calculator estimates gross rectangular wall coverage from length, width, height, coats, and a single coverage rate. This room-paint estimator adds non-painted openings and a purchase reserve, so it answers a different practical question: how much finish paint should be bought after the measured wall area is corrected. It does not estimate wallpaper, tile adhesive, flooring, or ceiling paint by default. Those materials have different units, cuts, overlaps, and loss patterns, so sharing one output would hide useful assumptions.
Check the order before buying
Recalculate from the written dimensions, then round the final litres up to available tins after the reserve is applied. Compare the result with the manufacturer’s stated spreading rate for the exact base, sheen, and application method. Keep enough of the same batch to finish one continuous wall; mixing batches on a large wall can make a colour difference visible in daylight. The calculation stays in the browser and does not transmit room dimensions, but local arithmetic cannot verify the condition of the substrate or replace the instructions printed on the paint container.
One last practical check
For a multi-room job, calculate each colour and sheen separately even when the total wall area is known. A bathroom ceiling, trim enamel, primer, and a washable kitchen wall coating can have different rates and container sizes. Mark which openings were deducted and which frames will be coated. That simple record prevents a later purchase from reusing a result made for another surface. If the calculation is close to a tin boundary, price both choices against the risk of a colour-matched refill; the cheaper arithmetic answer is not always the cheaper completed room.
