What the tile count represents

A tile order starts with finished surface area, then converts that area into individual tile faces. For a rectangular floor or wall, area is length × width. One tile face is tile length × tile width after both dimensions are converted to metres. The calculator multiplies the surface by the waste allowance, divides by one tile face, and rounds upward because a fractional tile cannot be installed. It also converts the count to boxes using the box coverage field, which helps compare the arithmetic with how tiles are actually sold.

Worked floor example

Suppose a bathroom floor is 3.6 m by 2.4 m: 8.64 m². The selected porcelain tile is 60 × 30 cm, so each face covers 0.60 × 0.30 = 0.18 m². With 12% allowance, the order area is 9.6768 m². Dividing by 0.18 gives 53.76, which becomes 54 tiles. If each box covers 1.44 m², divide the adjusted area by 1.44 and round up: 6.72 becomes 7 boxes. The extra tiles are not an error; they provide cuts and a small matching stock for repair.

Waste is determined by layout

Straight lay in a simple rectangle often needs about 5–10% extra. Diagonal placement, herringbone, narrow rooms, many doorways, columns, niches, or a deliberate centred pattern can need 12–20% or more. The percentage is not a universal tax added to every project. Sketch the starting line and locate the cuts before choosing it. Large-format tile can have fewer grout joints but more costly breakage, while small mosaics may be supplied on sheets whose stated coverage, not the nominal individual chip size, should be entered.

Tile size is not grout-joint size

The calculation counts tile faces. It does not enlarge every tile by the grout joint. Over a large area, joints do affect the exact field coverage and a manufacturer may publish a coverage figure for a specified joint width. For ordering sealed boxes, using the published box coverage is often the safer cross-check. Spacers, movement joints at perimeters, substrate flatness, trowel notch size, and back-buttering affect installation and adhesive consumption, but none changes the number of visible tile faces in the simple area equation.

Openings and irregular surfaces

Subtract a substantial un-tiled opening only after deciding whether its offcuts can realistically be reused. A shower niche, pipe penetration, curved edge, or diagonal doorway can consume more full tiles than its area suggests. Divide L-shaped rooms into rectangles, calculate their combined area, and retain a sensible waste factor for the extra cuts. Do not subtract every tiny pipe hole from the order. A 50 mm penetration removes little area but can ruin a full tile if it lands near an edge.

Boxes, shade and calibre

Order by boxes from the same production batch when possible. Tile ranges can vary slightly in shade and calibre, and the label may limit how different batches can be blended. Seven boxes in the example means seven sealed units even if the calculated tile count looks close to six boxes. Open boxes from several cartons during installation to blend natural variation, but keep an unopened matching box where feasible. A calculator cannot tell whether a shop’s box coverage includes a particular joint width, so read the packaging before treating its number as exact.

When the formula is the right tool

This page is useful for ceramic, porcelain, stone-look, or similar modular tile on a measured flat surface. It is a material-order estimate, not a substrate survey. It cannot determine whether joists deflect too much, whether waterproofing is required, whether a wall is plumb, or whether natural stone needs sealing. Those questions can change the whole installation method. It also does not calculate thinset, grout, trim, levelling clips, membranes, or labour because each depends on tile thickness, joint dimensions, trowel method, and surface condition.

How it differs from the basic tile calculator

The existing Tile Calculator accepts a finished area and one tile size to return a count with waste. This page begins with room dimensions and adds box coverage so that the output is an order quantity as well as a tile count. It is therefore suited to laying out a specific rectangular floor or wall. It is not the room-paint estimator: paint consumption follows coated area and porosity, whereas tile ordering is constrained by indivisible faces, pattern cuts, and boxes.

A final order check

Measure both directions twice, use the nominal dimensions printed by the manufacturer, and verify that the chosen waste percentage matches the planned pattern. Round the tile count and box count upward independently; never round the area down because a shop sells only full units. Save the product code, shade, calibre, and batch information with the calculation. The browser keeps the dimensions on the device, but a local result still needs a visual layout check before expensive tile is cut or a non-returnable lot is ordered.

One last practical check

Before committing to a pattern, dry-lay a row or make a scaled drawing from the real room dimensions and the manufacturer’s stated tile size. A centred layout can produce balanced cuts at both edges, whereas starting against one wall can leave a narrow sliver that wastes more tiles and looks worse. Include feature strips, borders, stair nosings, and edge trim in a separate take-off. Their linear metres are not captured by a surface-area count. Keep the calculated spare flat and protected so a future repair uses the same finish rather than a similar-looking replacement.
