Credits determine the influence
GPA is a weighted mean: each grade-point value is multiplied by its course credits, and the products are divided by total credits. A 4.0 in a 3-credit course contributes 12 points; a 3.0 in a 4-credit course contributes 12 more. Dividing 24 by 7 credits gives about 3.43. The two grades do not receive equal influence because the courses do not carry equal credit.
Use the institution's point scale
The figures 4.0 and 3.0 assume a particular grade-point scale. Some schools use plus and minus values, a 5-point scale, pass/fail marks, repeated-course replacement, or transfer-credit rules. Convert the transcript mark using the school's published conversion before entering it. A mathematically correct weighted mean can still be the wrong reported GPA if the scale or inclusion policy differs.
Term GPA and cumulative GPA differ
A term calculation uses only the courses in that term. A cumulative calculation needs every included course and credit from earlier terms, not merely the previous GPA rounded to two decimals. To update a cumulative record, combine the prior quality points and credits with the new quality points and credits. Averaging two displayed GPAs directly gives a misleading result when the credit totals differ.
Audit a transcript entry
For the default two-course case, the 4.0 grade has fewer credits than the 3.0 grade, so the final 3.43 sits closer to 3.0 than to 4.0. That direction check catches a common swapped-credit error. Keep a row for course name, attempted credits, grade points, and whether the course counts, then add the products rather than relying on memory.
Limits of the estimate
This page models two included numeric courses. It cannot determine academic standing, financial-aid eligibility, honors thresholds, degree progress, forgiveness policy, or an official transcript value. Consult the institution's catalog and registrar record when the result affects enrollment, scholarship, or graduation decisions.
A planning scenario
If the 3-credit course in the example were instead worth 4 credits, its 4.0 would contribute 16 quality points. Together with 12 from the 4-credit 3.0 course, the GPA would be 28 ÷ 8, or 3.50. This comparison shows why a course load change can affect a term average even when every letter grade remains the same.
Do not average displayed GPAs
Suppose an earlier record is 3.20 across 30 credits and a new term is 3.80 across 15 credits. The combined result is (3.20 × 30 + 3.80 × 15) ÷ 45, or 3.40. The midpoint, 3.50, is wrong because it gives the shorter term equal influence. Keep quality points and attempted credits when an official cumulative value must be reconstructed.
