What mistakes produce a wrong area figure?

A second worked example starting from hectares, converted to a small residential figure

A 500 sq m plot — the size of a modest suburban block — is 500 ÷ 0.09290304 = 5,381.96 sq ft, and 500 ÷ 4,046.8564224 = 0.1236 acres, or equivalently 500 ÷ 10,000 = 0.05 hectares. Comparing this with the 8,500 sq ft lot from the worked example above, the 500 sq m plot is smaller: 5,381.96 sq ft against 8,500 sq ft, even though “500” looks like a larger raw number than “8,500” divided by ten — a reminder that square metres and square feet are different-sized units and their raw numbers cannot be compared without converting first.

Why the United States retired its own separately defined acre in 2023

Until the end of 2022, the United States also recognised a slightly different “US survey acre,” based on a survey foot of exactly 1200⁄3937 metres rather than the international foot’s exact 0.3048 metres. That survey acre works out to 4,046.8726098742513 sq m — larger than the international acre used throughout this guide by only about 0.0162 sq m, or roughly 162 square centimetres, an area smaller than a sheet of paper spread across an entire acre. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration retired the U.S. survey foot as of January 1, 2023, so that all federal and most state land measurements now use the same international-foot-based acre described in this guide; older deeds and some state-specific legacy surveys may still reference the retired survey foot, detailed on NIST’s survey-foot resource page.

Converting a mixed imperial building description that names both length and area

A property listing describing “a 60 ft by 141.67 ft lot, about a fifth of an acre” can be checked two ways at once. Multiplying the two lengths gives 60 × 141.67 = 8,500.2 sq ft, matching the worked-example lot within a fraction of a square foot from the rounded dimension. Dividing that by 43,560 gives 8,500.2 ÷ 43,560 = 0.19514 acres, matching the “about a fifth of an acre” description closely enough to confirm the listing is internally consistent — a useful check when a length-based description and an area-based description of the same parcel are given separately and need to agree.

Comparing a US-style square-foot listing with a European-style square-metre listing

A US apartment listing advertising 750 sq ft converts to 750 × 0.09290304 = 69.68 sq m — noticeably smaller than the raw number “750” might suggest to someone used to reading square-metre listings, where a 1,100 sq ft US apartment (102.19 sq m) would be considered a large two-bedroom in many European markets. A hectare (10,000 sq m) is often introduced by comparison to a sports pitch because raw square metres are hard to picture: a standard association-football pitch is roughly 0.64–0.83 hectares depending on the exact permitted dimensions (FIFA allows 100–110 m by 64–75 m for international matches), so “2.5 hectares” from the worked example above is on the order of three to four full-size football pitches side by side — a useful mental anchor precisely because it is a comparison, not a substitute for the exact 25,000 sq m figure this guide already calculated.
