For a 9 by 13 inch, 2-inch-deep pan, base area is 9 × 13 = 117 square inches. A 9-inch round has area π × 4.5² = 63.6 square inches, so two rounds provide 127.2 square inches. Dividing 117 by 127.2 gives 0.92: the original batter will sit about 8% shallower in two equal-depth 9-inch rounds. That is a capacity comparison, not a timer conversion.

Measure the interior base, not a decorative rim. Multiply length by width for a rectangular pan; for a round pan use π times radius squared. Then compare the height that can safely hold batter, leaving space for rise. An 8-inch square pan is 64 square inches and a 9-inch round is about 63.6 square inches, so they are close only when their depths are comparable. A 9-inch round is not close to an 8-inch round: 63.6 versus 50.3 square inches is about 26.5% more area.
Check the units and assumptions
Do not use diameter as though it were capacity. Increasing a round pan from 8 to 9 inches adds only 1 inch to diameter but adds about 26.5% to base area. Do not treat a springform, Bundt, loaf, or tube pan as an interchangeable circle; shape, centre tube, and side height alter both volume and heat flow. Do not fill a pan to the rim simply because arithmetic says the total volume is similar.
Common mistakes
Area matching is most useful for cakes and bars with comparable pan shapes and depths. It does not preserve a sponge roll, a cheesecake needing tall sides, a loaf needing a particular profile, or a recipe whose method depends on a specified vessel. Pan material also affects browning.
