That $161.12 estimate is a different number from a receipts-based fuel-and-tolls total for the same trip, and the two should not be mixed in a single passenger split: a group settling costs from actual receipts is dividing what was really spent, while a group agreeing to a flat per-mile rate is choosing to value the trip a different way entirely, closer to how a reimbursement claim is often structured.

The uneven-distance edge case: a rider who only travelled part of the route
