Energy accumulated over time

A kilowatt-hour is energy: one kilowatt of power sustained for one hour. It equals 3.6 megajoules because an hour contains 3,600 seconds and a kilowatt is 1,000 joules per second. The conversion changes an energy total, not a power rating or the time taken to use it.

Charging-session example

Ten kilowatt-hours equals 36 megajoules. A battery that receives 10 kWh stores that energy only before charging losses are considered; a wall meter may record more. At a constant 2 kW output, the same 10 kWh could supply power for five hours, but a different load profile changes the duration.

Power and energy answer different questions

A 7 kW charger describes a rate of transfer, while 10 kWh describes an amount transferred. Multiplying a power value by a stated time produces energy, and dividing energy by time produces average power. Confusing these units is why appliance labels and electricity bills can seem inconsistent when they are not.

Conversion boundary

This page converts kWh to MJ. It does not estimate an electricity bill, battery range, appliance efficiency, or carbon emissions. Tariffs, losses, duty cycle, and fuel source are additional inputs for those decisions.

Bills use accumulated energy

Electricity statements normally charge kilowatt-hours accumulated over a billing period, not kilowatts alone. A 1.5 kW heater operating for four hours uses 6 kWh, which converts to 21.6 MJ. If its thermostat cycles on and off, the rated 1.5 kW is not the average power for the day. Meter readings or measured run time are needed to estimate consumption; the conversion itself merely expresses the same energy in another unit.

A useful magnitude check

A megajoule is smaller than a kilowatt-hour: 3.6 MJ make 1 kWh. Therefore an energy amount expressed in kWh becomes a larger number when written in MJ. A household use of 10 kWh should land near 36 MJ, not 3.6 MJ. Dividing the megajoule answer by 3.6 provides a quick reverse check before it is copied into a report.

Retain the time interval

An energy total becomes comparable only when its period is known. Ten kWh for one day and ten kWh for one month are equal amounts but imply very different average demand.
