Mechanical power ratings
One kilowatt equals about 1.34102209 mechanical horsepower. Power measures the rate at which work or energy is transferred, so the conversion applies to a motor's stated output rate rather than the energy it consumes in a day. Different horsepower conventions exist; this factor refers to mechanical horsepower, not metric PS.
Motor-nameplate example
Ten kilowatts converts to about 13.41 mechanical horsepower. A 10 kW electric motor does not necessarily deliver that full shaft output continuously: its duty rating, voltage, cooling, controller limits, and efficiency determine what is available in an installed machine.
Input power is not shaft power
An electrical meter may show power drawn from the supply, while a pump or motor specification may list mechanical output. Losses in the motor, drive, belt, gearbox, or pump separate those two quantities. Comparing them without an efficiency figure can make equipment appear to gain or lose power mysteriously.
Appropriate use
This converter changes kW to mechanical hp. It does not select a replacement motor, predict towing ability, calculate torque, or compare engine test standards. Match voltage, speed, duty cycle, torque curve, and the manufacturer rating before making an equipment decision.
Torque depends on rotational speed
Horsepower and kilowatts describe a rate, while torque describes twisting force. Two motors can both be rated at 10 kW yet provide different torque at a given shaft speed. A conveyor, fan, or vehicle application therefore needs the speed range and load curve in addition to a converted power number. Use the conversion to compare like nameplate ratings, then consult the manufacturer's performance data for the actual operating point.
Know the horsepower convention
Mechanical horsepower is slightly larger than metric horsepower, often called PS. A figure converted with 1.341 mechanical hp per kW will not exactly match a vehicle brochure using PS, even when both are honestly rounded. Label the convention beside a comparison table. This prevents a small standards difference from being mistaken for a change in engine or motor output.
Read continuous versus peak
A short peak rating can exceed a motor's continuous rating substantially. Convert the rating that matches the duty being compared, not the largest number printed in marketing material. A nameplate also commonly names insulation class and service factor, which affect whether the stated output can be sustained.
