Decimal storage prefixes
This converter uses decimal prefixes: one gigabyte equals 1,000 megabytes. Disk makers and network providers commonly use that convention, which follows powers of 1,000. It is distinct from binary storage, where one gibibyte equals 1,024 mebibytes; the similar-looking labels are a frequent source of apparent missing capacity.
A drive-space example
Ten GB equals 10,000 MB in decimal units. A 128 GB drive therefore advertises 128,000 MB, while an operating system that displays binary-based units may show a smaller numerical value even when no files are missing. Formatting, recovery partitions, and file-system overhead can reduce usable space further.
Bits are not bytes
A byte contains eight bits. Internet speeds are often quoted in megabits per second, while downloaded files are usually shown in megabytes. A 100 Mb/s connection has a theoretical ceiling of 12.5 MB/s before protocol overhead, so treating the lowercase b as a byte overstates the transfer rate eightfold.
Limits of the displayed total
This page converts decimal GB to decimal MB. It does not predict backup duration, verify a storage device's advertised capacity, or estimate how much a compressed video occupies. File format, codec, allocation blocks, and transfer overhead need separate information.
Transfer estimates need a real throughput
A 10 GB download contains 10,000 decimal MB, but transfer time depends on the sustained rate rather than the headline connection speed. At a steady 10 MB/s it would take about 1,000 seconds, or 16 minutes 40 seconds, before protocol overhead and pauses. Wi-Fi signal, server limits, encryption, and other users can reduce throughput. Storage conversion therefore describes file size, not a guaranteed completion time.
Read the prefix casing
Storage notation uses upper-case B for bytes and lower-case b for bits. Prefixes also matter: MB and MiB are not identical quantities. A device maker may be using decimal GB honestly while a software display reports a binary-derived value. Preserve the letters and prefix in inventory notes; writing only a bare number invites a later conversion under the wrong convention.
Leave headroom for operation
A drive filled to its nominal converted capacity may slow down or fail an update. Planning storage needs a reserve for the operating system, snapshots, and temporary files.
