Metres and international feet
One international foot is exactly 0.3048 metre, so metres are multiplied by 3.28084 to obtain feet. The factor describes a length, not an area or a volume. A drawing that says 10 metres therefore represents 32.8084 feet along one line. The relationship is exact by definition; the rounding in a displayed result is only for readability.
A room-plan check
A wall measured at 10 metres converts to 32.81 feet. If a builder needs feet and inches, the 0.81 foot is about 9.7 inches, making roughly 32 feet 10 inches. Keeping the unrounded metre measurement until the final layout avoids accumulating an inch of error across repeated studs, tiles, or fence bays.
Surveying is not tape measurement
A tape reading can be affected by slope, temperature, sag, and where its end points were placed. Property boundaries and construction dimensions also depend on the plan, datum, and tolerances named in the relevant documents. The conversion factor cannot decide whether a distance was measured horizontally, along a slope, or from a finished surface.
Where the number stops
This page changes a stated linear measurement between metric and customary units. It does not calculate perimeter, floor area, map scale, lumber allowance, or material quantity. Convert first, then apply the geometry or specification that belongs to the actual job.
Convert before cutting
For a shelf specified as 1.8 metres, the exact conversion is 70.866 inches. A cutting list may call for 70 7/8 inches, but the choice of fraction is a workshop tolerance decision, not a property of the unit factor. Mark the reference edge and account for saw kerf separately. A conversion can make a drawing readable to a different crew; it cannot replace the drawing's stated tolerances or a final on-site measurement.
A direction check
Feet are shorter than metres, so the numerical count must increase when metres are expressed in feet: 10 metres equals about 32.81 feet. If 10 metres produced 3.28 feet, the factor was used in the wrong direction. Conversely, converting 32.81 feet back by dividing by 3.28084 recovers approximately 10 metres. That round trip is useful when transcribing dimensions between a metric drawing and a customary cut list.
Record the datum
For architectural work, note whether the dimension is to framing, finished face, centre line, or property marker. The same converted length can describe four different physical endpoints.
