Miles per hour

Distance per unit of time

A kilometre per hour equals 0.6213711922 mile per hour. The conversion combines a distance unit with the same one-hour time interval, so 10 km/h becomes 6.21 mph. It describes average or instantaneous speed only after the measurement itself has been defined.

Reading a cycling pace

At 10 km/h, a rider covers 6.21 miles in an hour if the pace stays constant. At that rate, a 15-mile route would take about 2 hours 25 minutes before stops. The route result is a separate division of distance by speed; traffic lights, climbs, and rest breaks do not disappear because the unit changed.

Average and peak figures differ

A vehicle display may show a momentary speed, while a trip log reports total distance divided by elapsed moving time. Including a 20-minute stop lowers a door-to-door average but not the speed shown while travelling. Compare like definitions before judging fuel use, travel time, or a training session.

Practical boundary

This page converts km/h to mph. It cannot determine legal compliance, braking distance, wind effect, or arrival time in changing traffic. Road signs, local limits, and conditions remain the facts that govern a journey.

Use a time basis that matches the plan

A pace of 10 km/h converts to 6.21 mph, but a delivery schedule normally needs departure time, route distance, and planned stops as well. If a 30 km trip includes a 15-minute break, moving time at the displayed pace is three hours and elapsed time is three hours fifteen minutes. Separating those clocks makes a realistic plan and avoids labelling a stop as a change in vehicle speed.

Sanity-check the travel scale

A mile is longer than a kilometre, so the mph number is smaller than the km/h number for the same motion. A motorway speed of 100 km/h is about 62 mph, a familiar comparison that can expose a decimal error. Convert back before filing a log or entering a race pace, especially where one system appears on the vehicle and another in the record.

Avoid mixing pace and speed

Running pace is often minutes per mile or kilometre, the inverse of speed. A km/h-to-mph conversion cannot directly turn a speed display into a pacing target.
