Two scales with different zero points

Fahrenheit equals Celsius multiplied by nine fifths, then increased by 32. Unlike length and mass, temperature needs an offset as well as a scale factor because zero Celsius and zero Fahrenheit mark different reference points. Multiplying 10 by 1.8 gives 18; adding 32 produces 50 Fahrenheit.

A weather-station example

A reading of 10 °C converts to 50 °F. Freezing water provides a useful check: 0 °C must become 32 °F, while 100 °C becomes 212 °F at standard atmospheric pressure. Those landmarks expose the common mistake of multiplying by 1.8 without adding the offset.

Oven settings need more than arithmetic

An oven set to 180 °C corresponds to 356 °F, yet recipes often list a rounded 350 °F setting. Fan-assisted ovens, rack position, pan colour, food moisture, and thermostat accuracy affect cooking results. Converting the dial setting does not convert baking time or guarantee the food's internal temperature.

Limits of this scale change

This tool changes Celsius readings to Fahrenheit readings. It does not calculate heat energy, wind chill, fever significance, or a safe cooking outcome. Use a calibrated instrument and the appropriate food-safety or medical guidance for decisions beyond the number.

Measure the thing that matters

Air temperature, surface temperature, oven setpoint, and internal food temperature can all be expressed in Celsius or Fahrenheit, but they answer different questions. A metal tray can read hotter than the surrounding air, and a refrigerator display can differ from the liquid stored inside. Convert the measurement taken at the required location, then compare it with the relevant specification. Changing scale never improves a sensor's placement or accuracy.

Use fixed points as a check

A Celsius reading below zero can still convert to a positive Fahrenheit value because of the 32-degree offset. For example, minus 10 °C becomes 14 °F. That makes temperature different from a simple proportional conversion. Checking the freezing and boiling reference points is better than relying on whether the result merely looks warmer or colder.

Keep the scale symbol

Writing 50 without °F invites a later reader to treat it as Celsius. Preserve the degree sign and scale wherever a converted reading is copied into a recipe, log, or instruction.
