How many inches of insulation is R-30?
R-value is thermal resistance, not a universal thickness label. If Product A is rated R-3.0 per inch, 10 inches has a nominal R-30. If Product B is rated R-3.8 per inch, 10 inches has a nominal R-38. The inch count is identical, but the declared product performance differs. A climate-zone table may state a target such as R-30 or R-49 for a particular building element; it does not convert every material to the same thickness.
Does insulation thickness determine R-value?
Read the product’s declared R-value and the conditions attached to it, then identify whether the question concerns a cavity, continuous insulation, attic, wall, roof, or complete assembly.
