How to measure real-world MPG from two fill-ups

Real-world MPG is miles driven divided by US gallons needed to refill the tank to the same practical level. When the odometer rises from 18,220 miles to 18,571 miles and the refill is 11.7 US gallons, the measured result is 30.0 MPG. The first fill establishes a known starting level; the second fill measures fuel used over 351 miles.

Worked example with numbers

Begin with a normal fill and note the odometer. At the next fill, use the same pump orientation and stop at the first automatic click rather than repeatedly topping off. Suppose the distance is 351 miles and the receipt says 11.7 gallons. The calculation is 351 ÷ 11.7 = 30.0 MPG. A third and fourth fill let you combine distance and gallons across a longer interval, which reduces the effect of one unusually early or late nozzle click.

How to make the calculation

The useful record has four fields: start odometer, end odometer, gallons added, and the conditions that matter to you. Resetting a trip meter is convenient but not essential. Divide total distance by total gallons, not an unweighted average of separate MPG readings. For example, 300 miles on 10 gallons and 100 miles on 5 gallons combine to 400 ÷ 15 = 26.7 MPG, not the simple average of 30 and 20.

Check the units and assumptions

Check whether the pump and dashboard use the same gallon convention. The site’s gas mileage calculator uses US gallons. If a receipt is in litres, convert the volume with a stated factor before calculating US MPG, or report km/L instead. A small typing error matters: 11.7 gallons is not 1.17 gallons, and a decimal shift would make an implausible 300 MPG claim.

Common mistakes

Do not calculate from fuel added after only a few miles unless both tank levels are known. Do not use the dashboard range estimate as the distance measurement. It is also misleading to compare a winter city-only tank with a summer highway tank as though a vehicle specification changed; the route and temperature changed the observation.

When this result does not apply

This method measures a period, not an immutable vehicle rating. It cannot isolate the effect of one tyre change, one fuel additive, or one driving habit without repeated comparable records. Manufacturer and laboratory values use specified test procedures, while a fill-up record answers the narrower question of what happened on your roads.
